Shamshad Akhtar was welcomed by the officers of the department on his arrival at the Ministry of Finance
Dr. Shamshad Akhtar took over the charge of Caretaker Finance Minister. A few minutes after taking the oath, Shamshad Akhtar reached the Ministry of Finance to assume her duties, the President of the State, Dr. Arif Alvi, administered the oath to the Caretaker Federal Cabinet.
Finance Ministry officials welcomed the Caretaker Finance Minister Shamshad Akhtar. Shamshad Akhtar was presented with a bouquet by the officials of the Ministry of Finance and felicitated.
A few minutes before Shamshad Akhtar arrived at the Finance Ministry, the Caretaker Federal Cabinet took oath. The federal cabinet includes 11 ministers and 7 special assistants.
It should be remembered that in the caretaker federal cabinet, Shamshad Akhtar has assumed the position of caretaker finance minister, besides Ahmed Irfan Aslam will be caretaker law minister. Ahmed Tarar will be the Caretaker Minister of Communications and Sarfraz Bugti will be the Home Minister.
Similarly, Dr. Gohar Ijaz will be the Minister of Industry and Commerce and Aneeq Ahmed will be the Minister for Religious Affairs. Syed Anwar Ali Haider has been given the portfolio of the Ministry of Defense while Murtaza Solangi has been given the Ministry of Information.
Jalil Abbas Jilani will be given the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Jamal Shah will be given the portfolio of Culture. While Muhammad Ali has been given the Ministry of Energy.
Similarly, Shahid Ashraf Tarar will be the caretaker minister of postal services, Dr. Nadeem Jan will be the health minister, Madad Ali Sindhi, Khalil George, Muhammad Sami Saeed will also join the caretaker federal cabinet.
Services of Dr. Shamshad Akhtar
Dr. Shamshad Akhtar served as the State Bank Governor for three years from 2 January 2006 and became the first woman to head the country’s central bank.
Prior to his appointment as State Bank Governor, Dr. Shamshad Akhtar served as the Director General for Southeast Asia of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) since January 2004. Earlier, she was the Deputy Director General of the Department. Shamshad Akhtar also held the position of Department Director, Governance, Finance and Trade Division in East and Central Asia.
Dr. Shamshad Akhtar was awarded Nishan Imtiaz by President Dr. Arif Alvi on the occasion of Independence Day this week.
Born in Hyderabad, Dr. Shamshad Akhtar received his early education in Karachi and Islamabad. He received his BA Economics degree from Punjab University in 1974.
Dr. Shamshad Akhtar has done MSc in Economics from Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad. He received his MA in Development Economics from the University of Sussex in 1977 and his MA and PhD in Economics from Paisley College of Technology, UK in 1980.
Shamshad Akhtar is a Postdoctoral Fellowship Fulbright Scholar and was a visiting fellow in the Department of Economics at Harvard University in 1987.
She has also been the Chairperson of the Board of Directors at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX).
